The Power of Story… [and Diapers]

When we started ImpactClub® in Boise I was so consumed by the details of where the venue would be, sending out daily marketing and invitations, ordering t-shirts, mailing t-shirts, responding to Facebook comments and questions, collecting and organizing nominations, the list goes on and on.
At the first events, I was so consumed with making sure people got signed in okay, that the sound and audio was working properly, that voting ballots were being handed out correctly, charities that were speaking were checked in and ready, the videographers had all their instructions, all the while trying to say hello to everyone and thank them for coming.
It was all consuming.
It wasn’t until I handed over the microphone to these founders and directors of local non-profits that I stopped, heard, and felt the magnitude of what we were doing.
The stories behind these local charitable organizations are incredible, and they are stories we, as a community, don’t hear enough.
Before ImpactClub® I had never heard of Idaho Diaper Bank and had no idea they provide critical support to 45 other social service organizations in our community, distributing over 50,000 diapers per month.
I knew diapers were expensive. When my daughters were both in diapers, I remember thinking I should be buying stock in Pampers. I can only imagine the difficulty for the 35,000 other families in Idaho who have children 3 and under.
I learned from their story that there is no government assistance for basic hygiene items like diapers, and that lack of diapers is a rarely talked about hidden consequence of poverty. The Idaho Diaper Bank buys semi-truck loads of diapers in bulk, to lower the costs, to make them available for children in need.
Hearing and sharing Shawna Walz’s story about Idaho Diaper Bank has an impact on me, so I’m confident it has impact on others as well.
People like the idea of making a difference, but often don’t know where to start.
We’ve tried to design ImpactClub® as a way to provide us all with a conduit to connect with and support the many organizations who are already doing amazing work through all corners of our community and to help them share their stories.
If I had never heard of Idaho Diaper Bank before ImpactClub®, then chances are a huge percentage of our community has never heard their story either.
What do you think will happen if we can help share their story with the rest of the community?
More awareness = more support, more engagement, more impact.
That’s the power of story.
That’s the mission behind ImpactClub® Boise.
